So many new things happen during the first trimester (0-14 weeks) of pregnancy. From emotional and physical changes to medical tests and appointments, it can feel like a rollercoaster. Never fear, we’re here to help you enjoy the ride.

Here’s a guide to what you need to know about your first trimester:

  1. Prenatal Care - register your pregnancy as early as possible with your local Health Authority to connect with a public health nurse and hear about community resources that’ll provide you, your baby and family with the latest information and care. This support is available to all pregnant women who are residents of BC. Here’s how to register.
  2. Check-ups and Tests - visit your doctor or midwife early in your pregnancy to receive the recommended prenatal care for you and your baby. You and your healthcare provider will discuss your health and well-being, your goals for a healthy pregnancy and prenatal nutrition. Here’s what to expect.
  3. Physical and Emotional Changes– your body goes through a lot of normal changes during each trimester of pregnancy. In the first trimester, you may feel more tired, urinate more frequently, or have shortness of breath. Here’s an overview of what your body will go through and how to cope.
  4. Baby’s Development - your baby grows quickly in the first trimester, passing through two stages of development. By 12 weeks, all your baby’s organs will be formed and functioning. Here’s how the growth progresses.

Register as early in your pregnancy as possible to receive the best possible care.
